Have you all noticed an increase in crime in the hood lately? We have at the Dutch Boy, and have heard similar from someone at the Vulcan.

We've had several more auto break ins, and a few things have walked away.

I'm hoping it's seasonal, but maybe a bigger trend?

We just had a truck burglary here on Ford St.--looks like they tried to steal it first--bent the steering column trying to get the Club off--broke something off in the ignition--when they failed both of those--they crawled underneath and used a saw to steal the catalytic converter!

There is a big trend in stealing catalytic converters. There are some metals in there that get big rewards if recycled. Platinum for $1,298 per ounce, Palladium for $375 per ounce and Rhodium for $5,950 per ounce. The crooks usually cannot seperate the metals to obtain a profit but who knows, maybe the recycle yards are helping them. They aren't the most legit of places, usually. I dont think there is a way to lock up your catalytic converters because they usually cut them off anyways. Maybe let your dog hang out by the car. But then they would probably steal your dog also.

      Just keep an eye out.
  • After months of walking home along San Leandro from the Fruitvale BART station alone at all kinds of crazy hours, I finally got mugged! Well, the guy tried, anyway. I screamed like crazy and ran a quarter-mile home and made it behind the fence with him still about 30 feet behind me.

I've been wondering if it's a trend, too -- it's just so *weird.*
