crime: break-ins, auto theft, walkaways, tweakers

Have you all noticed an increase in crime in the hood lately? We have at the Dutch Boy, and have heard similar from someone at the Vulcan.

We've had several more auto break ins, and a few things have walked away.

I'm hoping it's seasonal, but maybe a bigger trend?

city car share - Fruitvale Pod?

Hey folks-

I just joined City Car Share http://www.citycarshare.org. So far I am really happy with it, but I'd love to have cars closer to where I live.

At the moment, the pod of cars closest to my home is Lake Merritt @ 580 underpass. Carshare will consider adding a pod at Fruitvale BART if they can get about 30 new members in that area. Please consider joining, or pass the word on to your neighbors.

Car sharing, it's not just a good idea, it's good sense!

cheers,

-lane

I miss my old stomin grounds. I went to Montera Jr. High, Montclair elem. & Sky Line High School.

My brother is living in Montclair, and I am coming there for a visit in April!

I love the bay area, such a great place. I wish I could buy a house there, but now days, forget about it.

Anyways, I am only here for a week with my wife and kids...

Is your agency, community group or business interested in participating in upcoming community fair?

Several groups in the Dimond neighborhood are working together to plan an outdoor community fair for sometime after mid-April. The event will be held in a parking lot near the intersection of Fruitvale & MacArthur, will feature live music, informational booths and tables, multicultural activities of various kinds and will be several hours in length.

We'd like to invite community organizations, local businesses and public agencies to contact us about having a booth or table at the fair. At this time there is no charge for participation. You can also arrange to have your literature placed on our general information table.
Let me know if you are interested in participating :)

house cleaning recommendation?

Hi -

Anyone in Fruitvale/Mills/Maxwell Park area have a house cleaner that you really like who has some availability? There are now 5 of us in our house, and we've decided we all have better things to do than keep up on the cleaning. We'd be looking for someone who is trustworthy and personable, okay with cats, does a good job (duh) and hopefully is easy to communicate with.

We would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

The Edge of Non-Conformity: Brian McDonald and Ezra Li Eismont

Feast your eyes upon the latest works from Brian McDonald and Ezra Li Eismont.

Enter the mind bending worlds of two artists who are driven by demons of contemporary life. Brian McDonald paints and collages tortured and comical images of characters espousing wit and wisdom. Ezra Li Eismont, master of eastern and robotic figures, displays his spiritual canon of modern life wackery.

the high st./san leandro st. intersection has got to be my least favorite intersection. between the crappy pavement, left turn turds (people who can't do it right), speeders, train track backup, etc. makes my want to avoid it whenever i can.

other avoidant-behavior creating zones:
- high and international
- most of international blvd, especially weekends

Hey, once again the BBQ grills - two big suckas - will be in full effect at 4pm (actually this is when they will get lit, but ya know what we're saying), so bring something to thrown on there or donate a few bucks to El Loco BBQ ('Master of the Grills') and he will let you get in on his shyte. There will also be bands at 6pm, if ya like. You can do one or the other or both.

Cheap PBRs for sale at the bar.

New Earth Creeps is playing first, so get there early enough to see them. This is their full strength line-up.

You can print a copy of this flyer for the rest of today by going to http://www.wethepunx.com

space available in great live/work warehouse

Hello-

Two spaces are available in my space - one immediately, the other March 1. The space is huge - 3200+ square feet, with 40' ceilings lots of light in an airy open space. Two roll up doors, full light metal (welding, lathe, etc.) and wood shop. Full pallet racks for storage. Full bath and a bathtub 30' in the air. Open space all around outside. It's a really great space!

Space is fully built out, four finished rooms in this house, one is a guestroom. Rent for the rooms is about $600-700, including utilities. $700 deposit. Pets considered. Cigarette smoke ok outside. Month-to-month, flexible arrangements can work.

Ideally, I'm looking for people that will really make use of the space and its potential. The place is perfect for creativity in a variety of mediums. Laid back, open minded, responsible, etc. A cool community of neighbors is here, and we throw pretty good parties here from time to time. Living in a place like this can be a lot of work so you'll be expected to share in maintenance, cleaning, etc.

At the Dutch Boy Studios in the Fruitvale Area of Oakland. On San Leandro Street at High - 15 minute walk from the Fruitvale BART, near 880 and 580.

If you're interested, email teiwaz@disturbia.com or call (415)533-5797.

Thanks, and please forward to anyone you think will be interested!

home despot

so i, um, noticed there's a huge fucking home despot going in where the huge fucking super kmart went out of business.

i have mixed feelings about this.

on the one hand, it will be very convenient (the lifeblood of strip mall america) to have a home depot right there, open late. much better than schlepping to emeryville or worse, san leandro to the one next to (gak) walmart and (gak) costco.

on the other hand, home depot sucks ass. i don't enjoy shopping there. they hire a handful of managers who get benefits, then give hourly wages to people who could care less about doing a good job - sapping the life out of them and the community. i also like the little hardware stores, like pagano's in alameda.

so i guess the best middle way is to go out of my way to frequent pagano's or any other small hardware store in the area (are there any?), and only go to the despot when necessary.

Kali Askari Davis, 25, of Oakland, and Terrance Hegler, 22, of San Leandro were shot and killed at 2:45 a.m. Saturday at a Valero gas station parking lot at High Street and Foothill Boulevard in East Oakland. They were killed during one of numerous illegal car rallies called sideshows.

"Somehow, these sideshows have to be stopped," said Hegler's grandfather, Cleophas Hegler. "It causes too much hurt to people. It's like a loaded gun. These youngsters don't know what they're doing."

During the sideshows, an Oakland police officer was injured after revelers placed a brick on the accelerator of a car and aimed it downhill at the officer's car.

In a separate Oakland slaying at 5 p.m. Saturday, police found Marcus Syess, 24, suffering from a gunshot wound after his car crashed into another car on the 3900 block of East 18th Street.

In Richmond, Michael Angelo Smith, 24, was killed, and Shamia Ingram, 24, of Vallejo was injured, when someone opened fire at 9:15 p.m. Sunday as they sat in a car on the 3900 block of Fleming Avenue.

Breakdown: DECOMPOSE the MAN

Breakdown: DECOMPOSE the MAN. fuck the SYSTEM
Saturday, November 6 rain or shine
Gallery Reception 7-9pm, party from 9pm till whenever
donations requested

The scope of this event is different now. I am angry and confused, but coming out of the darkness energized. Aren't you? Come over and let's burn off some of this energy, UNITE in the fire of the MOVEMENT. The revolution is not over, it is building. Do not deflate or wallow in the worldwide burden of Wednesday - we have each other, and there are more of US than you may realize, even outside of our bubble. Come over and have a nice big cup of Anarchy and a beer, we must move forward.

+breakdown
This party is to decompose the NEGATIVITY from the election bullshit. Enliven the energy of that thing in the desert (yes we know it's been a while); though we now must move BEYOND it. Nurture the decomposition of the system, of your brain - the next level is coming out of the darkness, guided by LOVE.

It's also a benefit to replace the engine in my roommate Pete's truck that threw a rod on the way to BM this year. We'll throw the rest of the rods too if you come over (see below). So kick in a few bucks (six to sixty, sliding scale) to help us get a new engine block! Of course, no one turned away for lack of anything, including clothing. We'll have some goodies and booze, though it would be awesome if you brought drinks to share.

+sounds
2+ Bands
Skiffington (skiffington.com/) fun and heavy with songs like "fucking like bunnies" and "be my friendster"
+the shack
shanty of delight built with free materials is in the back yard, a temorary space to revel in.

+destruction
We're pulling the Chevy 350 that died miserably on the way to the playa and mounting it on a cart. We'll then rev that fucker up red hot until it explodes. Think of it as an Evangelical!

We'll also be battering and deep-frying a Hummer H2* - see that gas guzzling icon of everything that is wrong with the world.

+spoken word
Did you breakdown this past Wednesday? I did, it was one of the darkest days I can remember. Or share your stories of breakdowns or breakups on the way to, or on the playa. You've got one - everybody does.

+fire and art
Unlike that thing in the desert or within the Republican party, we'll have fire, fire making devices, and more... Performances too. Maybe even some clown groping. Temporary art everywhere... bring some** The art gallery will be open most of the night for your patronage.

+burn it
have a bunch of filing, a la election mailers, voter pamphlets, propaganda, junk mail, etc. you want to burn? bring it over and toss it on the fire.

*scale model prototype

"Difficult and painful as it is, we must walk on in the days ahead with an audacious faith in the future. When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
Event Description:
Open studios and gallery show featuring the art of twenty-one resident artists working in a diverse variety of media; including painting, sculpture, printmaking, sound and video installation, stained glass, furniture design, ceramics and more. Studios and gallery will be open throughout the day with performances and live entertainment in the gallery space in the evening. The event provides a unique opportunity for the public to experience the art of Oakland today and the work represented in the aptly named “Temporary Gallery” will provide visitors with a concise cross-section or compacted geographical survey of local artists and their work. Pieces by the artists will be available for sale in the gallery as well as in their studios; a wide range of styles and prices ensure that collectors, art lovers and holiday shoppers alike are sure to find one-of-a-kind treasures to take home.

Background:
One of the earliest industrial-reclamation projects in the San Francisco Bay area, The Dutch Boy, as it is known to tenants, has been operating as an artists’ community continuously since 1978, and is among the first in Northern California to have open studio events, inviting the public to view art in the setting in which it is created. Hundreds of Bay Area artists have called the facility home in the past twenty-six years; in fact, several of the artists featured at this event have maintained studios there nearly that long.

The Dutch Boy Artists Studios cover over one half of a city block in the culturally diverse Fruitvale neighborhood of East Oakland. Originally built in the 1920s, the factory complex served as a strategic manufacturing center during WWII, producing paint for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The factory closed in 1970, and the facility’s transformation into artist’s studios began later that decade.

The complex’s unique and spacious studios, many of which are airy and filled with natural light, facilitate many different types of art-making, from large scale industrial sculpture and sound installations, to more traditional practices such as painting and drawing. The impressive variety of art produced in this environment fuels a rich multi-disciplinary dialog between artists. This is the foundation of the dynamic and remarkable community that inhabits the Dutch Boy Artists’ Studios.

Gallery:
A gallery space, created specifically for this event and appropriately named the “Temporary Gallery,” will showcase the work of artists in the complex. Oakland artist Spygirl, independent curator of “The Bedroom Gallery” in Prague, Czech Republic, and formerly of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, is developing the show around the themes of tactile and nontactile occupation, changing physical form, and fleeting human existence. Both a reference to the transitory nature of the gallery itself and an examination of identity, objectivity and subjective reality, the theme, “Temporary Space,” serves to bring a level of cohesion to the exhibition beyond that of just geography or proximity of studio spaces. Maps of the studio complex indicating the location of each artist’s studio will be available in the gallery space.

Participating Artists:

Peter Anderson
Jeff Berger
Sharon Bontrager
Kimberley D’Adamo

Hi - i just "discovered" this 'hood recently. I haven't explored it much yet, and not on foot. However, it looks like livable place.

Are there streets/trails around the area for casual bike riding - maybe one that lasts 30 min. to several hours? Or is it too congested there, and maybe unsafe to ride around - whether from congestion, crazy drivers, or inner-city violence (ok, keep in mind I don't know the area well, so I'm just wondering)? I'd appreciate any inside scoops! :)

Halal, Kosher, Organic?

Hey neighbors!

I know I've passed by some places nearby that sell Halal meats, but I can't remember where they are. Anyone know?

I know this may disturb some vegitarians, but I feel that if meat comes from a Halal farm then the animal was treated with kindness. I'm not too formal or religious about my Islam, but I am intensely spiritual about my life. This is the kind of mindfulness that goes into the food I eat. If its not Halal, I'll go for Kosher. If not Kosher, then I go for organic/free range. I also prefer Halal milk for the same reasons.

So, what with Ramadan coming up and all, where can I get some Halal food? Kosher? Organic?

I wanna know more about this 'hood and such. Where to go, what to do, all that such. (Good to see Taiwaz heading this up!) Also, I am a teacher in special programs and if any of you know of any schools, community centers or whatnot around here, let me know. I am a great instructor with a great record and wonderful references.

Aside from that, I am an award winning writer and looking to either join or start a writing workshop/group. Anyone down for that?

Holla back!
